2002 Troop Events
U.S.S. Yorktown - Patriots Point, Charleston, S.C. About 20 scouts (including adults) went on the trip to the U.S.S. Yorktown on November 8-10. We left from the church at 3:15 on Friday and returned to the cabin at about 2:00 on Sunday. We went to Fort Sumter, except three scouts, who got lost (I wonder who those could be?). There was a nuclear submarine, a destroyer, and a Coast Guard Cutter to tour on. The snack and drink machines charged an exorbitant amount of money, though. Overall, it was a fun trip. Yorktown & Busch Gardens - On the weekend of October 18-20, 2002, the troop went to Newport News City Park near Williamsburg, Virginia. Thirteen scouts and four adults went on this trip, including Jim. We arrived at the park at around 11:20 p.m. on Friday night. On Saturday, we went biking to Yorktown to learn about the battle at Yorktown in the Revolutionary War. We biked next to the York River on the way. At the Yorktown battlefield, there was a tactics demonstration with a platoon showing how war was fought in the Revolutionary War. In the afternoon from about 3:00 to 10:15, we went to Busch Gardens. We left camp to go home at about 9:00 on Sunday and got to the cabin at about 12:35. Pilot Mtn. Climbing Trip - On October 4 - 6, Scouts visited Pilot Mtn. State Park and did a 10-mile hike and rock climbing. Mawat District Camporee - On the same weekend as the climbing trip, seven scouts attended the "Show What You Know" camporee at Camp Reeves. We arrived Friday night and set up. On Saturday we went to all the events, which included a tripod race that took 1 1/2 hours first aid trail, nature trail, knot relay, orienteering course, and cooking competition, which we made chili. That night we went to a great campfire and won second place in the uniform inspection. (Thanks to Nick D. for the report.) Bear Island Campout - On September 14-15, the troop went to Bear Island. Eighteen scouts went on the trip. There were 3 patrols, with about 6 Scouts per patrol. There were 3 adults on the campout. The good things were: Andrew brought a frisbee, and we got to go in the ocean. The bad things were: "mutant killer mosquitoes", it rained, and sand got in the tents. View photos. Camp Campbell Water Park - August 23-25 was our annual water park campout. It was held at Kerr Lake. There were at least 20 scouts there. On Saturday, we set up the water park. Also, the Webelos from Pack 486 came. The water park campout was, in one word, fun. Sure, the lake level was down about six feet. But it was still fun. The Troop did everything it normally did on the campout. We set up the zipline, erected the water slide, and cleared out the swimming area. The big disappointment was the water slide. The good news about the water slide is that we cleared a big rock that hurt everyone who went over it. That was the only good thing. It appeared that the water slide just wasn't as fun this year. Overall, it was still one of the troop's best campouts. Climbing, Shotgun and Rifle Shooting - Eighteen Scouts and eight adults spent Saturday, August 17, at the rifle and shotgun ranges and the climbing wall at Camp Durant. Several of the Scouts were completing their Climbing merit badge work, others worked on Shotgun Shooting and Rifle Shooting merit badges, and still others just climbed, rappelled and shot for fun. As an added bonus, four Scouts cooked chili dogs for everyone, to complete the Cooking merit badge that they started at Raven Knob. View photos.
New Scout Campout - 14 new Scouts and 6 older Scouts spent the weekend of June 14-16 at Presbyterian Point. Scouts worked on advancement, mostly Tenderfoot and Second Class requirements, and several Tenderfoot Boards of Review were held during the weekend. Several more were held at the Scout meeting on the following Tuesday. In addition to working on advancement, the Scouts swam, canoed and sailed. Several of the Scouts slept under the stars on Saturday night 20-Mile Hike - As part of the Hiking Merit Badge, and to prepare for Philmont 2002, six Scouts and five adults completed a 20-mile hike on June 8. The group hiked from Jordan High School through Woodcroft, up the American Tobacco Trail to downtown Durham, and through downtown to Duke Park. The return hike was along the same route, with a stop at McDonald's for a trail lunch. Whitewater Rafting, French Broad River - The Troop spent Memorial Day weekend inn Hot Springs doing day hiking and a full day of whitewater rafting. 18 Scouts and 11 adults attended. On Saturday, everyone hiked a 5.8 mile section of the Appalachian Trail which featured some great views of the French Broad River. Several of the new Scouts completed their 5-mile hike requirement for Second Class on this hike. On Sunday, everyone went down the French Broad River for about nine miles in four-person rafts and one-man inflatable kayaks (rubber duckies). This section of the river had several Class 1, 2 and 3 rapids, and finished up with a Class 4, Frank Bell Rapids. Will G. proved that the third try is a charm by staying in his ducky this time. He has passed the captaincy of the French Broad Swim Team to Conner. Several Scouts became new members of the swim team as well. View photos.
Hargrave Merit Badge Classes - Scouts earned a number of Merit Badges and got partials on many more at Hargrave Military Academy from April 5 to April 7. Several of the boys also got an unexpected lesson in being prepared for cold-weather camping, and in sleeping on top of Camelbacks. Mawat District Camporee - The new Scouts attended the camporee at Camp Campbell and worked on advancement on the same weekend that older Scouts went to Hargrave.
Ski Trip, Timberline Resort, WV - The Troop headed up to snow country on February 8 for a weekend ski trip. Winter Camp at Raven Knob - From January 11 to 13, Scouts worked on advancement, went biking, did some shotgun shooting, and got stuck in the mud at Raven Knob.
