N&O Article: Merit badge goal leads to Eagle

The News & Observer newspaper in Raleigh had a nice article about one of our scouts, Bram, making Eagle.

Merit badge goal leads to Eagle

When 15-year-old Bram Lovelace was in the fourth grade, a program at a Lowe’s store caught his eye. Kids could earn patches by building things. This is fun, he said. I want to do more of this. “If you’re a Boy Scout, you can get all kinds of badges,” his dad told him.

STEM Camping Weekend / Railroading Merit Badge

The weekend of August 19-21, several scouts from Troop 451 went camping at the New Hope Valley Railway in Bonsal, NC.  While on this campout, the scouts completed the Boy Scout technology STEM award (Start Your Engines!) along with the Railroading Merit Badge.  In addition, scouts also completed 2 nights camping that they can apply towards 1st Class rank and one scout completed his 1st Class cooking requirements.  This was the first campout of a series of campouts emphasizing the Boy Scout STEM awards and offering opportunities to complete new scout requirements up to 1st Class.  The next STEM campout will be the weekend of October 14-16 where the scouts will work on the Boy Scout math STEM award (Designed to Crunch) and the Radio Merit Badge (in conjunction with the national BSA event, Jamboree On The Air or JOTA).  Some pictures of this camping weekend can be seen here:
